SUMMARY:Green Man\, Dark Earth: Faces of an Archetype
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this evening event – a personal exploration of one of Britain’s most known and unknown images. \nThe Green Man is a carved male head\, surrounded by or disgorging leaves. His image embodies the beautiful and the sinister\, and can be seen as both a life and death force: he offers the possibility of a reconnection with our intuitive sense of nature. Despite his primordial roots\, this figure continues to regenerate and  has recently re-surfaced as a contemporary image that challenges our attitude to identity and our place in the world. \nComing at a time of crisis – when attitudes to our natural environment are seriously challenged – this talk  will examine the positive and negative aspects of growth and how we might engage with this re-emerging  image of the Green Man as a symbol to mediate and counterbalance our attitude towards nature\, both inner and outer.

SUMMARY:Next Steps in Gardening for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Understanding life cycles of the wildlife in our gardens is critical when we’re planning what to do\, what to add\, and what to change each year.  With this theme in mind\, we will use our structure of Food\, Shelter and Water to explore what you have in your garden and what you could do next to understand and support that wildlife. We’ll also explore a practical monitoring system\, which will help you with your decisions. \nThrough the workshop\, we explore these questions: \n\nWhat can we do to increase the amount of natural food for wildlife in our gardens?  From soil upwards\, what makes the most difference?\nHow do we provide natural shelter for wildlife that supports their life cycles? What part of their life cycles requires what shelter?\nHow much water and in what ways should we provide it?  Weather permitting\, this element will include a site visit to two gardens in the centre of Stroud to explore the power of micro ponds.\n\nThere will be plenty of time for you to discuss your own garden during the workshop.  You will be asked to do some homework before the workshop\, which will involve spending at least 15 minutes exploring and reminding yourself what you currently have in your garden.

SUMMARY:Orchard Workshop - pruning
DESCRIPTION:This workshop focuses on pruning different fruit trees and managing them to reach their full potential. \nThe Severn Treescapes: Dead Wood Society has created a series of workshops to increase confidence among landowners to plant and look after traditional orchards and fruit trees. This workshop is funded by Wye Valley National Landscape\, Farming in Protected Landscapes. \nBeing a dual-purpose land use\, orchards can provide a vertical farming element to traditional farming and ultimately provide a new income from the fruit\, as well as providing a fabulous habitat for a huge range of wildlife and beneficial insects. This series of workshops looks to provide information\, education and confidence to enable participants to manage their orchards successfully. \nOrchards are iconic features in the Gloucestershire\, Herefordshire and Worcestershire landscape\, but have declined by at least 75 % in the last 50 yrs. The drive to plant new and restore old traditional orchards will help to reverse the decline of this priority habitat and of the wildlife that depends on it. \nWell-managed orchards create an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the wildlife potential in the vicinity. Orchards provide excellent feeding habitat for birds\, bats and invertebrates\, and where adjacent to strong mature hedgerow networks radiating towards nearby mature woodlands\, unimproved grasslands and other orchards\, increase connectivity across the wider landscape. \nTim Andrews of Orchard Revival\, and Gloucestershire Orchard Trust expert\, will be running the workshop. He has many years of experience planting and managing orchards in Gloucestershire and making cider from the produce. \nMaintenance pruning and fruit tree care \n\nLearn how to prune trees safely\, looking at different fruit types and varieties\, and how to manage the trees to reach their full potential.\nQuestions and discussion are encouraged throughout the day.\nThe day includes a strong element of practical work. Stout boots and good outdoor clothing are essential as much of the day will be spent enjoying the elements.\nAll equipment will be provided.\nHot drinks and lunch are also provided\, please let us know of any dietary requirements when signing up.\nThis event is to be held at the Tudor Farmhouse Hotel in Clearwell.\n\nTo see the whole series of workshops we are running this season\, please visit the collection here: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/orchard-workshops-2912649?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=creatorshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=odclsxcollection&utm-source=cp&aff=escb
