Identification of the Wild Flowers of Our Commons
From Classroom to Countryside
Join us for a day exploring the beauty and diversity of our local wildflowers. This hands-on workshop introduces the basics of flower taxonomy, helping you understand how different plant families are organised and how to recognise the key features that distinguish one species from another. We’ll look closely at the wildflowers found on our local commons, learning the indicators that make identification easier in the field.
In the morning, we’ll work with fresh specimens in the classroom, practising with identification keys and guides to build confidence in spotting key characteristics such as flower shape, leaf arrangement and growth habit. You’ll have the chance to compare species side by side, ask questions, and develop your observation skills in a supportive and friendly environment.
After lunch, we’ll head out to a nearby nature reserve to put your new skills into practice. During a relaxed guided walk, we’ll search for and identify plants in their natural habitats, exploring how soil, light and landscape influence the species we find. By the end of the day, you’ll be able to recognise a range of local wildflowers and have a solid foundation for further plant identification.
Whether you’re a beginner, a nature enthusiast, or simply curious about the plants around you, this workshop offers an enjoyable and informative introduction to the world of wildflowers.
