Introduction to Lichen

Introduction to Lichen

Discover the Hidden World of Lichens

Unlock a whole new layer of the natural world with our immersive Introduction to Lichens workshop. Whether you’re a nature lover, hiker, photographer, or simply curious about the tiny wonders living all around you, this hands-on experience will change the way you see your environment forever.

Lichens are everywhere—on trees, rocks, rooftops, and paths—but most people walk right past them without ever knowing the astonishing story behind them. They’re not plants. They’re not fungi. They’re something far more fascinating: a remarkable partnership between organisms living and thriving together.

  • Discover what lichens really are and why they’re unlike anything else in nature
  • Learn to recognise the major types—crustose, foliose, and fruticose—through interactive demos
  • See how lichens reveal the health of their environment

This workshop is split into two parts, and you are welcome to join both or just the classroom sessions.  We’ll spend the morning in the classroom, exploring and learning the key things about lichen and then head out to Bisley Road Cemetery, where you can use your new skills to find and identify lichens in the wild.
